I know exactly what I need to do… I just can’t do it”

This is one of the most misunderstood ADHD experiences.

You’re not confused.

You’re not unmotivated.

You’re stuck.

What executive dysfunction actually feels like

  • staring at a task and not starting
  • feeling overwhelmed by simple steps
  • avoiding things that matter
  • waiting until urgency kicks in

It’s not a knowledge problem

You don’t need:

  • more lists
  • more planning
  • more reminders

You already know.

The issue is activation.

If this is you, it might sound like:

  • “Once I start, I’m fine—but starting is impossible”
  • “I waste hours thinking about doing something”
  • “I need pressure to function”

Strategy shift (practical but realistic)

Instead of:
👉 “Just start”

Try:

👉 Lower the entry point

Examples:

  • open the document (not finish it)
  • put one dish away
  • write one sentence

This reduces resistance.

Second strategy: externalize structure

Your brain struggles with internal structure.

So create:

  • timers
  • body doubling
  • visible cues

Important truth

If something only works when you’re under pressure…

That’s not motivation.

That’s your nervous system forcing activation.

Therapy helps:

  • reduce shame around these patterns
  • build realistic systems
  • understand your limits
